Welcome to Landscape Photography Academy!
If you are ready to seriously improve your landscape photography skills and connect with other like-minded photographers, you are in the right place.
Founded and run by pro landscape photographer Meredith Fontana, this group offers a mix of in-person and online workshops and photography meetups designed to help you improve your skills, share techniques, and connect with fellow photographers.
Online workshops will cover topics such as post-processing, composition, trip planning, and more - accessible from the comfort of your home.

Join pro photographer Meredith Fontana for a two-part live virtual presentation where we’ll explore the elements and principles of visual design through the lens of landscape photography. This isn’t about memorizing rules, rather, it’s about learning to see and compose with purpose.
Part 1: The Elements of Visual Design (December 18, 2024)
In the first session, we’ll explore the fundamental elements of visual design that shape every great landscape photograph. We’ll study iconic works by legendary painters like Turner, Monet, and Van Gogh, alongside masterpieces from photographers like Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter. By seeing how they used design elements, you’ll learn how to apply these ideas in your own work - no rules or rigid formulas required.Here’s what we’ll cover in this first session:
- What is visual design, and how does it apply to landscape photography?
- How understanding design can free you from rigid composition "rules.”
- How to see and interpret the landscape with an artist’s eye.
- You will learn the essential elements of visual design that shape every compelling photograph, including line, shape, form, texture, color, tonality, and space.
- We’ll explore how master painters and photographers have used the elements of design to create compelling compositions.
- Exercises and tips you can use to practice what you learned and incorporate these concepts when composing your images in the future.

Part 2: The Principles of Visual Design (coming January 2025)
In the second session next month, we’ll build on these foundational elements by exploring how to arrange them within the frame. We’ll talk about balance, hierarchy, scale, unity contrast, visual flow, and more - and how these principles and visual concepts can help you create images that feel cohesive, dynamic, and emotionally resonant.How to Register
